LUKOIL ACCOMPLISHED REINSTATEMENT OF LANDS IN KOMI

LUKOIL has completely fulfilled the Corporate program for reinstatement of the contaminated areas and prevention of accidental oil spills in Komi Republic in 2000-2005.
One of the Program’s priorities was elimination of the consequences of the accidental oil spills in 1994 and removal of the “environmental disaster zone” status from a number of Komi Republic Usinsk region areas.
LUKOIL channeled more than 4.6 bln. rubles to be spent for environmental activities in Komi Republic in 2000-2005.
The land users received back 1592.75 hectares during this period. 891 hectares were biologically re-cultivated including 383 hectares were reforested. 718.65 hectares of the reinstated oil-containing lands were re-cultivated. More than 230 thousand tons of oily wastes were recycled. 878.7 km of pipelines were replaced. Besides, two new hydraulic locks were erected on rivers and three existing were upgraded. As a result of this work, no oil or oily liquid entered the sewage system during the flood periods.
The area of the accident in 1994 was released from the “environmental disaster zone” status in 2004.
“In spite of the fact that our Company started working in Komi Republic 5 years after the dramatically known accident of 1994 at the Vozei-GOSP oil pipeline, LUKOIL volunteered to eliminate its consequences. This decision proves once again the adherence of the Company to the socially-responsible business principals,” Vagit Alekperov, President of LUKOIL, said.
